MoMo Amsterdam #5: mobile banking

April 8th, 2008 by Patrice

Last week the 5th MombileMonday.nl took place. The main thread of the evening was “Mobile Banking”.

As last time some companies presented their applications in 5 minutes, then answered questions during five minutes.

The most interesting talk came from mr. Jan Smits (professor in the area of Law and Technology at the technological University of Eindhoven).
He explained that the main issue at hand is that on one hand we have operators that are all about cash flow and on the other we have banks that are all about trust. And the question is: “is there enough middle ground between those in order for a ecosystem to emerge called mobile banking”.
The industry is trying since a long time and it is still not clear when this will finally will break through.

Of course, one of the reason may be that also banks suffer from the not-invented-here-syndrome: all the tools, chips, handsets etc have been built, tested and used in real life in countries like Japan and Korea; but nooooo, the people at Rabobank need to re-invent the wheel ;D

Finally, what was surprising was the lack of worries about security among many speakers. Which is typical of non-banking people I guess. Nope, I’m not a banking person.
